Santa Fe Mayor, Michael J. Garcia shared his view on the newly announced legislation to protect the Caja del Rio in the Santa Fe New Mexican on May 9, 2026.

"Preserving the Caja is also central to closing the nature gap. Across the country, communities of color and low-income neighborhoods have disproportionately less access to safe and healthy natural spaces. Santa Fe is no exception. The Caja del Río offers opportunities for recreation, learning and healing that should be accessible to every family in our city. Ensuring equitable access to such spaces is part of building a healthier, more connected Santa Fe."
