Illegal dumping is a major problem in public lands all over the state and the Caja is one of the most active illegal dumping grounds in Northern New Mexico. Caja Coalition member, Carmichael Dominguez spoke to the Santa Fe New Mexican about this ongoing problem.

“Mattresses, furniture, clothing, hot water heaters and even life-sized skeletons of the human body like what you’d find in a biology class — Dominguez said he’s seen it all out on the Caja del Rio, much of it shot up and left as ‘trigger trash.’”

The Caja del Rio Coalition is hosting a cleanup day on Saturday, April 18, 9:00AM-1:00PM. Bring trucks, work gloves and sun protection and meet at the La Cieneguella Petroglyph site. “’I think it definitely has a domino effect. We see where if you kind of allow illegal dumping to fester, it just continues and piles up quickly,’ Dominguez said.”
